What is Applied Research?

Applied research focuses on solving practical problems and addressing immediate issues and concerns. It aims to create direct applications for its findings, often offering tangible, actionable solutions. While academic research seeks to advance knowledge through theoretical exploration and understanding, applied research focuses on practical application and solving real-world problems. In alignment with the mandates given to us by the First Nations Leadership Council, our applied research focuses on these areas:

Connectivity

Improving access to high-speed internet and digital infrastructure.

Enhancing digital literacy and capabilities.

Core Research and Engagement Values

Community-driven: Our research is guided by the needs and priorities of First Nations Peoples and involves community members in all stages of the process.
Culturally responsive: Respectful and cultural sensitivity guides our research.
Participatory design: Collaboratively design and implement technology solutions with communities, ensuring shared ownership.
Pilot projects: Implement small-scale projects to test and refine solutions, with regular impact assessments to evaluate outcomes.

Ownership, Control, Access, Possession (OCAP): We respect and adhere to OCAP, and the core principles of data sovereignty drive our research.
